North Korea, country of… what actually? North Korea is mostly known for its totalitarian regime led by Kim Jong-un. Officially, it’s called the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea, which has the same feeling as the German Democratic Republic: everything but democratic.
The Korean Peninsula was united and independent for nearly a thousand years — successively under the Goryéodyna, Joseon dynasty, and Empire of Korea — when Japan occupied Japan in the early 20th century. After the Japanese surrender in 1945, Korea was divided in two.
Attempts to reunite the country failed, leading to the birth of the Democratic People’s Republic…
When I was a kid, I was deeply interested in books about creating the earth and the dinosaurs and, of course, space. I had three of those childish books that explain the history of basically anything to kids. I really loved these three books.
This interest in space and history kept influencing my life until this day. There are a couple of topics that I really like, for example, the creation of the Moon.
Scientists aren’t completely sure about how the moon was created, but they are getting closer and closer to the solution.
The way people saw the world, and particularly how it came into existence, was irrevocably altered as a result. Darwin’s theory of evolution was the first to be proposed, and it was a direct challenge to the Christian idea that the planet was created in six days. His assertions were based on the findings he had made during his five-year voyage abroad aboard his ship, the Beagle.
Darwin, who was just 22 years old, embarked on a journey to South America. Before returning to Europe, he continued his voyage over the continents of Australia and Africa. …
On the 10th of June, this Italian socialist politician was kidnapped and murdered after he accused the fascists of committing election fraud. Matteotti was born to a wealthy family in Veneto. He obtained a law degree from the University of Bologna and was an activist in the socialist movement and the Italian Socialist Party from an early age.
He opposed Italy’s participation in World War I and was therefore interned in Sicily during this war.
Global advances in technology such as the web, nanotechnology, and telecom produced a disruption of economic conditions around the century.
After World War II, the United States had a great economic boom, establishing the greatest middle class in history. In a book, The Affluent Society, American economist John Kenneth Galbraith claimed the private sector in particular, though much less, received the rewards of this affluence. He worried whether the strength of big companies was sufficient to restrain it.
“Should the system balance,” he writes, “the unions, the cooperatives, the credit banks of farmers and small retail chains.”

The world was shocked after the news that some object had crashed into the earth near the American town of Roswell, NM, in July of 1947 during a thunderstorm. I recently discovered this fascinating news article from the 1940s.
Reports of an alleged flying saucer crash near Roswell are known by ufologists as the most important UFO incident ever.
In July 1947, a remarkable event was said to have taken place on a farm near Roswell. The report made world news for a short time. …

I hate working for a boss.
That’s it, I’ve said it. I really hate it.
Three years ago, I quit my part-time job at the supermarket in my hometown. I felt really relieved, and now I’m a full-time freelancer who’s also a student.
According to Statista, 53% of the United States population did freelance work in 2014, and 6 years later, in 2020, almost 59% was freelancing. Moreover, this amount of people is expected to keep growing.
Being a freelancer gives you so much freedom. But also comes with a bunch of risks you have to accept. For example, not…
On this day in 1901, the Cuban constitution was changed, and the Platt Amendment was adopted. What was this, and what did it mean for Cuba and its inhabitants.
When Cuba became formally independent on May 20, 1902, it had to comply with the Platt Amendment, which allowed the United States to intervene in Cuba’s internal affairs.
In addition, the Amendment allowed the Americans to maintain a base in Cuba, Guantanamo Bay, still in American hands today.
The Cuban War of Independence began when José Martí, together with Máximo Gómez and Antonio Maceo, formed a liberation army that came to…
